While working on my longer travel posts, I would still like to sprinkle my blog with mini posts on my daily musings. There is so much that I want to share about my trips that it’ll take a bit more time. Meanwhile, I’ll share with you what I do on my weekends with little chunks of wasteful time. 😀
So, candles. My favorite things ever. I can’t help but sniff each one as I pass by them in a store and will probably exit the store with one in my bag. There are about 8-10 candles around our apartment with varying scents. I tend to gravitate towards cool, fresh scents or anything lavender. I don’t have a big nose (ha) for sweet scents.
When the wicks give out and the wax is low, you know it’s time to move on to the next. Because the candle holders are usually adorably decorated or nicely shaped, I have a hard time just tossing them out. As such, they end up laying around the apartment like dead batteries. I’ve had the idea to clean them out and reuse them as holders for my other knick-knacks so finally got around to it today. 🙂
Genius me tried to light one up thinking, “I’ll just melt the wax and pour it out.” Duh, T, you stopped using them for a reason. They ran out of juice. Instead, I used a butter knife to carve out all the wax. To my surprise, the wax broke apart pretty easily. I then used olive oil (you can use any type of oil) to wipe the waxy remnants out of the container. It was a matter of seconds that the oil did its job, and the candle holder became wax free.
With the bigger, rounder candle holder, I decided to put a couple of my nail polishes in there. I don’t paint my nails that often, so I thought it wouldn’t be such a hassle to dig through or empty them out when I did want to pretty up. For the other thinner and taller candle holder, I think I’m going to use it to hold my makeup brushes.
Depending on the shape of your candle holders, you could also use them for:
— USBs/flash drives (nerd alert)
For such an easy DIY project, I felt extremely accomplished by turning something decorative into something useful..that is also decorative. 🙂 I guess it’s not often that I have time to do things like this. Now what to do with my other five empty candle holders…
